Teaching Your Kids Your Values

The Main Ways That A Private High School Differs From Public Schools

As your child nears completion of elementary or middle school, you may consider their options for furthering their education. You may not like the idea of sending them to large public high schools. You may fear not only for your child's safety but also for the quality of learning that will be available to them.

Instead of trying to find the safest and highest-quality public school to send your student to, you can instead choose to send them to one that is privately funded and chartered. You can take advantage of the differences in education and safety that are found in a private high school for your son or daughter.

Private Funding

When you send your child to a private high school, you can take advantage of the fact that it is privately funded. Public schools rely on grants from the state and federal governments to operate. When these governments experience financial shortfalls, they often cut funding to public schools first.

These cuts shortchange students and leave them without the resources that they need to learn. Alternatively, a private high school receives the bulk of its funding from sources like tuition from parents, donations from supporters, and grants from any religious parishes or churches with which they are affiliated. They often have more money in their budgets and can better supply students with what they need to learn.

Religious Instruction

If the private high school that you send your student to is affiliated with a particular faith system, you can expect your son or daughter to receive religious instruction each day. Catholic students, for example, often attend Mass before the start of school every morning. Other faiths may start their days with prayers or meditations. Religious instruction is not allowed by law in public schools.

Finally, a private high school is not subject to the same laws and standards that govern public schools. It does not have to teach secular lessons with which you may not agree as a parent. It also does not have to administer standardized tests that are common in public schools.

A private high school can offer a different level of education than that found at public schools. Your child may have better funding and learning resources. They also may receive religious instruction and avoid having to learn government-mandated secular lessons.
